April 2, 11 - Brahmin's new year
In 2008, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi passed the Tamil Nadu New Year (Declaration) Bill 2008 to change the date of the New Year from the April to January.
Criticism came from a number of Tamil Hindus ( particularly the Brahmins) who were used to a centuries-old tradition – for them, the first day of Chithirai was the New Year’s start.
Hindus were reluctant to accept the change as they have been told by the Brahminical society what to follow and how to follow and what would be the consequences of not following the so called sacred scripture.
Two reasons were stated for the change
1. That the traditional system is based on the Sanskritik (read Brahimincal) system (which is evident from the image from 1832)
2.Tamil literature points out to Thai being the beginning of the new year for Tamil.

2008 ஆம் ஆண்டு , கலைஞரின் திராவிட முன்னேற்ற கழகம், தமிழ்நாடு புத்தாண்டு (அறிவிப்பு) சட்டம் 2008 படி தமிழ்ப் புத்தாண்டு ஏப்ரல் மாதத்தில் இருந்து ஜனவரிக்கு மாற்றப்பட்டது.
இந்த மாற்றத்திற்கான சட்டம் அமல்படுத்தப்பட்ட போது, ஏப்ரல் மாதத்தில் புத்தாண்டினைக் கொண்டாடும் வழக்கம் கொண்ட குறிப்பிட்ட சதவிகித தமிழ் இந்துக்கள், குறிப்பாக பிராமணர்கள் இந்த மாற்றத்தினை ஏற்றுக்கொள்வதில் ஆர்வம் காட்டவில்லை. காரணம், அவர்களது பிராமணீய மனம் அந்த மாற்றத்தினை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள மறுத்தது. காலம் காலமாக அனுஷ்டிக்கப்படும் பாரம்பரியம் இது என்றும் இது வேதத்திற்கு ஒப்பான உண்மை என்றும் அதனை எவ்வாறு மீற முடியும் என்றும் கூறினர்.
சித்திரையில் இருந்து தைக்கு புத்தாண்டு மாற்றப்பட்டதற்கு 2 காரணங்கள் சொல்லப்பட்டது.
1. இந்த புகைப்படத்தில் இருப்பதே சித்திரைப் புத்தாண்டு பிராமணர்களுடன் தொடர்புடையது என்றும் சமஸ்கிருத பாரம்பரியத்தை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டது என்று நமக்கு உணர்த்துகிறது. 2. தை தான் தமிழ்ப் புத்தாண்டின் தொடக்கம் என்பது தமிழ் இலக்கியங்களின் வழி நமக்கு உணர்த்தப்பட்டுள்ளது.
